JOHN HAYCOCK
https://john-haycock.bandcamp.com/album/what-remains
‘What Remains’ is the new album from John Haycock featuring Daniel Bridgwood Hill and produced by resonance founders Matthew Williams and Adam Kahan, mastered in Berlin by Arnold Kasar.
Originally composed for resonance and performed and recorded live at Hope Baptist Chapel in Hebden Bridge in 2023, the composition uses kora, clarinet, violin, guitar and electronics to produce a heartfelt conjunction of acoustic, processed and environmental elements, deeply rooted in the land and history of the Calder Valley, West Yorkshire.
The original recording has been evolved, opened out and ‘worldized’ in Todmorden Unitarian Church, a term coined by Walter Murch - to play a recorded sound through loudspeakers in a real world setting and re-record the output in order to capture the natural reverberation and acoustic architecture of live spaces.
This enriches the recordings with all that is contained and stored within these inspiring, much loved locations. The release includes sessions from Wainsgate Chapel, Hebden Bridge, The Portico Library in Manchester and the former Post Office sorting house in Todmorden.
The album is a summation of 3 years of events that combine refracted light, acoustic and processed sound, with the natural reverb of treasured settings in the mystical Calder Valley, creating a harmonic standing wave of audio, visual and somatic experience. These live events draw on the regions’ deep histories of social reform and religious resistance, folk magic, powerful topography and ancient forces.
SADE ARELLANO
Rooted in oral tradition and communal DIY spirit, Sade’s music draws from deep wells of tradition and place; inspired by English, Scottish, and Irish folk, medieval ballads, Yiddish klezmer, and Appalachian mountain songs. Using their voice and instruments, their sound is raw, immediate and intimate, built on drone chords, simple melodies and stories to create a living, breathing folk practice shaped by spell casting and storytelling.
They are known to sing in unconventional spaces: forest clearings, caves, empty car parks, echoing tunnels, abandoned buildings, and in the dark corners of pubs and smoking areas.
