GOTO is proud to present an evening of live tape music explorations from Jérôme Noetinger and Howlround. Both acts break free of the potential starchy nature of the genre to provide a truly entertaining circus of sound.
Jérôme Noetinger is perhaps best known as the audio component of La Cellule d'Intervention Metamkine - a trio working between experimental cinema and improvised electronic music - as well as directing the label and distributor Metamkine for more than 30 years. Noetinger found his instrument of choice, the Revox B77 tape recorder, in 1987 and has been interrogating the device since. His live performance showcases an improvisatory form of pure tape music - a revelation to those accustomed with the genre being based strictly in the studio, devoid of real-time input. Expect to lay witness to something, somewhere, between expert talent and total sonic magic.
Howlround is the tape music project of Robin the Fog and his quartet of reel-to-reel machines. Based strictly upon the sounds of the tape and machines themselves, Howlround performances stray from the serene to the inarguably wild, reimagining the Radiophonic Workshop as the mainstay of noise music, rather than of radio jingles and TV BGM from days gone by. Nevertheless, no external effects or artificial reverberation are permitted. Whilst this could all portray a somewhat restrained image, Howlround shows are action packed with every tape system assembled requiring near-constant maintenance throughout each performance. The result is a combination of aural juggling and studious engineering.
