It’s a great honour to host the fiddle & guitar adventurism of Mike Gangloff & C Joynes at Bedminster’s very own living room style joint.
Mike Gangloff has stretched his approach towards the fiddle through founding groups such as Pelt & Black Twig Pickers and arrived at what Bill Meyer recently observed as ‘augmented Appalachia’, drone meditations that weave improvisation, melodic composition & traditional airs. Over the last decade, C Joynes has ploughed a singular furrow through solo guitar, with a body of work incorporating English folk-tunes alongside North & West African music, and lifting proto-minimalist & improvised techniques from the European classical and avant-garde traditions.
This collaborative tour offers an exciting meeting point of two singular musical minds - the angular dynamics of C Joynes’s amplified archtop guitar that places intricate parlour music alongside overdriven garage blues throw-downs with the brittle ringing tones of free improvisation sparring with Gangloff’s hardanger-style violin equipped with sympathetic strings or his octave fiddle that shifts the sound towards the earthy notes of the cello.
Joynes has released 10 albums to date, including ‘Poor Boy On The Wire’ (2021), his first solo album dedicated wholly to the electric guitar; ‘The Borametz Tree’ (2019), recorded with long-term fellow travellers Dead Rat Orchestra; and ‘The Wild Wild Berry’, a collaboration with singer Stephanie Hladowski (fROOTS Editors Choice Album Of The Year 2012, MOJO Top 5 Folk Albums 2012). He has played extensively across the UK, Europe and the USA, sharing bills with performers including Shirley Collins, Martin Carthy, Marc Ribot, Alasdair Roberts, Richard Dawson, Jack Rose and 75 Dollar Bill.
Following celebrated albums by Pelt & Black Twig Pickers, including a BTP album with Steve Gunn. Mike Gangloff’s latest releases are the album Evening Measures released in 2022 by VHF Records and a 7” shared with New England guitarist Liam Grant that came out on the Sound-o-Mat label earlier this year. A collaboration with US exploratory guitar masters Elkhorn is due out later in 2023.
Those that were part of C Joynes last visit to Friendly Records for the Winter Guitar Jamboree in 2021 know how special that occasion was. This Spring evening holds much the same promise.
