We welcome the remarkable CLOUDMAKERS TRIO to FRINGE JAZZ. Now in their 10th year playing together with 4 albums to their name the Cloudmakers follow on for their 2018 quintet release Traveling Pulse by returning to further explore the trio format with new music from Jim Hart centred around the prepared vibraphone.
Leader Jim Hart (Marius Neset, Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Wheeler), has developed a highly personalised voice on the instrument including preparations to enrich the acoustic sound of the vibes. While pushing the boundaries of what can be done with this instrumentation they remain devoted to in the moment risk taking, a deep groove and strong melodies.
MOBO nominee Michael Janisch underpins the group with his virtuosic and driving bass playing that has led him to work with some of the greats: Quincy Jones, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Osby, Ingrid Jensen and Joe Lovano to name a few.
Drummer Dave Smith is best known for his work with Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, Afro-Blues group Juju and as co-leader of afro-dub Fofoulah as well as electro-acoustic improv groups Strobes, MA and Splice.
With their uncompromising approach, Cloudmakers Trio effortlessly marry the complex with accessible, the improvised with the composed. Their music lies somewhere between New York's downtown sound and the modern European tradition and demonstrate what is possible from the under-exploited format of the vibraphone trio.
"Hart has a positive genius for rhythmic hide-and-seek. His improvised lines grab your attention and won't let go, no matter how many tricky corners he gets into. There's no mistaking the musicianship and phenomenal togetherness of all three." 4 Stars, The Observer
