La Perla at The Jam Jar
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Live cumbia direct from Bogotá! La Perla are here for a good time, exuding transcendent harmonies and intricate percussive grooves all grounded in Colombian folk roots, Caribbean sonic traditions and a radical punk spirit. The Jam Jar’s spoiling us rotten: this Bristol debut’s been a long long time coming, and there’s really nowhere / no one else representing Latinx riddims like this!"

A gig held at The Jam Jar on Saturday 11th July. The event starts at 20:30.

For many years, we've been patiently waiting to welcome Colombian percussion and vocal trio La Perla to The Jam Jar. The stars have finally aligned.

Moving seamlessly between Colombias Caribbean coastal roots and contemporary urban sounds: bullerengue, cumbia, merengue, gaita and champeta to punk, hip hop and beatbox - La Perla bring powerful lyrics, raw energy, and a wealth of tradition.

The Jam Jar, Bristol

La Perla was formed in 2014. The three Bogotanas traveled through rural regions of Colombia and the Caribbean to study the musical languages of bullerengue, cumbia, merengue, gaita, and Creole champeta, learning them at their roots and weaving them into their own songs. Their lyrics highlight social concerns, denouncing political corruption, racial injustice, and gender discrimination. Their debut EP Paren La Bulla (2017) and the inclusion of the track Bruja in Netflix’s Siempre Bruja brought them international attention and touring opportunities across the Americas and Europe, where they were met with great success.
