Bal Folk Dancing at The Jam Jar
Pay what you feel

A event held at The Jam Jar on Saturday 5th February. The event starts at 11:00.

We're planning:
- Beginners balfolk dance workshop
- Free for all music session
- Live music to dance to. Please get in touch if you have some tunes you've been practising that you would like to try out on some dancers, and we'll save you a slot ([email protected])
- Bring & share lunch. We'll be providing tea & coffee. Please bring food to share and anything else you want to drink.

This is not a ticketed event. We will be collecting donations on the day to cover venue costs and fundraise for future Bristol bals. Please donate what you feel and what you can afford. Remember to bring cash!
Children are very welcome, and are the responsibility of their parents.

What is “bal folk”?
It’s a term that is used to describe social folk dancing primarily from France and Belgium, but often also from Scandinavia, Italy, Catalonia and many other places too! Dances include bourrée, mazurka, scottische, chapeloise, an dro, gavotte, polska and many more. The music is often played on accordion, fiddle, bagpipes or hurdy gurdy.
You don’t need to bring a partner along, the vast majority of people will dance with a number of different partners throughout the evening. Some of the dances are in couples, while for others everyone dances together in a circle or a line snaking around the room. Flat, smooth-soled shoes are recommended! Some of the dances are a little trickier than others but you’ll be able to pick up most of them as you go.

Accessibility: the venue is on the first floor, up a flight of stairs. You can find more detailed information at www.thejamjarbristol.com/accessibility.

Transport:
Free parking is available directly opposite the venue all day Saturday. There are pay and display spaces on Little Ann Street directly in front of the venue. The venue is also situated 200m from Cabot Circus Car Park which has accessible spaces and an accessible toilet.
The Jam Jar is 1 mile from Bristol Temple Meads train station. Nearest bus stops are 'Lamb Street' (200m) and 'West Street' (400m).

Covid:
We request that you take a Lateral Flow Test on the day of the event and not attend if you test postive for Covid or if you are feeling ill. Bring a face mask - some people may prefer to dance with masks on so please respect that. Please also see the Jam Jar's covid policy here: www.thejamjarbristol.com/covid-policy
