A major new work by Mercury Prize 2021 nominated artist Hannah Peel, commissioned by and performed with Paraorchestra and Charles Hazlewood, The Unfolding takes a cyclical journey from the very atoms of human existence and the awakening of life, through to our eventual re-folding back into the elements.

This first live performance of Hannah Peel and Paraorchestra’s album The Unfolding, recorded in March 2021 and due for release in Spring 2022, features a glorious 14-piece ensemble of acoustic and electronic instruments as well as a human voice for a transportive, playful, and otherworldly sonic experience. The Unfolding follows the huge success of Hannah’s 2020 album release Fir Wave.

“An immensely reassuring piece of work, a reminder of how small we are in the bigger picture” (Music OMH on Fir Wave).

The first part of the evening’s double-bill features a new commission from Bristol-based composer and Associate for Paraorchestra, Lloyd Coleman, in a work inspired by the wondrous beauty and complexity of algorithms – on every aspect of today’s world.

Hannah Peel
Hannah Peel’s compositions are exceptionally vivid and transportative. The classically trained composer and musician encompasses a vast repertoire across her work, from the sparser instrumental delicacy of her 2011 debut ‘Broken Wave’, to the lively electronica of her most recent record ‘Fir Wave’, and as a presenter on Radio 3’s ‘Night Tracks’.

“An album that moves in circles between techno rhythms and contemplative ambience” (Bandcamp Daily), ‘Fir Wave’ reimagines parts of Delia Derbyshire’s electronic library, working these into a whole new spell-binding context.

This is a Bristol Beacon presents, unreserved seating show at St George’s Bristol, Great George St, Bristol BS1 5RR.
