DARK ALCHEMY III
Dead Space Chamber Music | New Haunts | Tommy Creep
Friday 7th September 2018, Church of St Thomas the Martyr, BS1 6QR
Entrance by suggested donation: £4 or more. Doors: 8pm
Tuning into the static...the haunted air...out of the deep dark ether, where distant sounds glitch and echo, ringing out in otherworldly chorus...as the evenings begin to draw in, we invite you to share in a night to move the heart and stir the bones.
In the stunning setting of St Thomas the Martyr, the third instalment of the Dark Alchemy performance series presents a triple-headliner of innovative Bristol artists, in an evenings programme which promises to be potent with atmosphere and cathartic power.
The Dark Alchemy series is an evolving concept, first created by Dead Space Chamber Music. This is the most collaboratively produced edition so far, with all performing artists having worked together to produce the night in all its detail. The aim is to create a kind of musical alchemy: to provide a testing ground for bringing distinctive musical elements together, and create a combined, unique and transformative event experience. This will include a specially created zine for sale exclusively on the night, with diverse artworks contributed by friends and fellow artists in Bristol.
Previous incarnations have been held at The Old England, and the crypt of St John on the Wall, and have included the debut performance of Kolophōn; Agathe Max of KURO ( Rocket Recordings ), violin, & Drew Morgan of Modulus III, cello.
Refreshments will be available from a small fundraising bar, and there will be beautiful special-edition band and event merch for sale. Note: this event is cash only.
The artists are grateful for the support of the The Churches Conservation Trust , who take care of many sacred buildings in Bristol and beyond. The event will be raising funds for the charity, please give generously.
Original event artwork by Tommy Creep and Ellen Southern.
About the artists:
Dead Space Chamber Music, https://www.facebook.com/DeadSpaceChamberMusic/ , are a dark ambient / ritual / gothic / ethereal / neoclassical trio of cello, guitar and voice, based in Bristol, UK. Inspired by the focused intensity of ‘chamber music’, the band channel and expand it in both musical and performative scope, creating a uniquely emotive, transportive and atmospheric live experience. Pieces move between shimmering veils of fine textured sound, to heavily saturated effect-laden drones incorporating finely crafted treatments, often infused with vocal field-recording based sound-scapes.
The OEIRA E.P (March 2018) achieved radio play in the UK and the USA, and together with critically acclaimed performances, is bringing the band to wider attention https://dscm.bandcamp.com/album/oeira-e-p . Their debut album will be launched at the crypt of St John on the Wall, again courtesy of the Churches Conservation Trust, on Sunday the 23rd September: see Dead Space Chamber Music debut album launch event
“Beautiful performances like ceremonial sonic-arcs…Neoclassical pitch-dark.” The Cube, Bristol
“Gossamer, hypnotic, yet darkly lucid [...] the likes of which I've not quite heard. Under their influence, the listener enters an altogether ancient, and post-modern apocalyptic ritual. This is the perfect soundtrack to a World tumbling toward some dire cosmic end, packed with just enough "hope" to inspire us toward new beginnings." - The Unquiet Meadow, Asheville FM (USA)

New Haunts is a vocal/electronic solo project from Bristol, UK, which contrasts the jarring with the serene. Combining elements of post-punk, early industrial, goth and synthpop with soft ambient synths, arresting yet melodic vocals, discordance and mechanical beats, the result is a hypnotic rush of darkwave summoned against a hard-hitting and eclectic rhythmic backdrop. Her debut album Worlds Left Behind was released in May 2018, and has received wide acclaim.
“For us one of the best albums in the genre for a long time. Listen in, let yourself be enchanted.” - Dark Life Experience
"That monster of a synth bass line instantly grabs you and drags you to the stake while tribal drums put you in a trance. “Waves” by New Haunts doesn't take any prisoners but puts you in the midst of an electronic fire ritual. Above you the high priestess calls for the gods to accept your sacrifice with the most intense vocals" - Rule Of Three
"A great example of darkwave that's both emotional and experimental" - Peek-A-Boo Magazine
Tommy Creep will be presenting the first live performance of his new solo material described as ritualistic modular synthesis inspired by death industrial and the occult. This evolving work encompasses dark ambient and industrial techno.
