A
gig
held at Strange Brew
on Sunday 27th February. The event starts at 18:30.
And Not Or is back for the second instalment of a new monthly Sunday event series focusing on ambient and experimental music, with an (optional) restorative yoga practice. Utilising the versatile space in Strange Brew, a spectrum of live audio and visual artists and DJs will soundtrack an extended Sunday afternoon and evening split into two sessions. The first session centres on a 90-minute yoga practice with a soundtrack of ambient and drone music, it's accessible for beginners and experienced yogis alike (it involves a lot of lying down and breathing properly, with some gentle movement and stretching, and it makes you feel amazing). The second session continues the theme of ambient and experimental music previously explored by And Not Or via artists such as Don’t DJ, Aboutface, and Dan Nicholls.

Avsluta, AKA Lucie Štěpánková, will headline the event with a live set that draws on her musical talents as an electro-acoustic musician, and working knowledge of ambient techno music as the person behind the introspective electronics mix series and radio show. Whilst the fact that she's a regular at London's Cafe Oto and IKLEKTIK art centre, a resident DJ for Netil Radio, and works behind the counter at Phonica Records tick all the boxes on paper, its the enthusiasm and warm energies she shares that will put you in the best place to enjoy her hypnotic dreamscapes of analog synthesis, sharpened detail and immersive texture. She will be joined once again by the ever impressive Hanzo with his take on generative algorithms that have been recently showcased at Tate Modern, IKLEKTIK, and many of the best deep techno and ambient events in London. As always, he will provide psychedelic visions that compliment and augment the music by drawing you into the trance and further down the rabbit hole.
Joe Ellis, a key part of And Not Or, will be belting down the A466 to head back into Bristol to provide a deep listening DJ set. As half of UntilMyHeartStops, and the forthcoming Lamassu, his keen taste for presenting overlooked electronic music through his labels, and in his DJ sets and guest mixes is rivalled by none. Holding high standards for himself means that the work he puts in rewards listeners with a special experience that will likely demand both attention and adoration.
Soundtracking the start of the evening (or post-yoga melt for you yogis) will be none other than Strange Brew's in house regular hero, Curly Waters. Another tenacious head who will be sure to deliver on any brief, you can be confident that he'll be digging the edges of his boundaryless collection for the weird and wonderful.
Jessica Kennedy will be guiding a special practice for those keen to start the proceedings with an embodied practice of slow movement, still connection and sentient awareness. Once again, Dan Thorman will be accompanying the yoga practice with deeper tones and meditative music, delivered through the beautiful in house soundsystem.
Ultimately, you're all welcome to come and do what you want with us. Sit, lie down, drink, chat, move, dance, think, etc etc blah blah...there will be lots of cushions and soft furnishings.
