Robert Stillman + Tom Skinner (solo)
Thursday 17 July 2025
7pm - 10:30pm

Multi-instrumentalist Robert Stillman (sax and bass clarinet with The Smile) and percussionist Tom Skinner (drummer with The Smile, Sons of Kemet, Melt Yourself Down) present solo sets that blur the boundaries between jazz, minimalism, and experimental sound.

Robert Stillman crafts meditative, genre-defying compositions built around layered saxophones, fx and tapes. Drawing from spiritual jazz, 20th-century classical and American folk traditions, his music evokes a sense of deep interiority and timelessness. His recent works, including What Does It Mean to Be American? and Portals, have earned critical acclaim for their emotional depth and compositional boldness. In solo performance, Stillman creates immersive sound worlds that unfold with subtle grace and improvisational vitality.

Tom Skinner, known for his powerful rhythmic presence and boundary-pushing collaborations, steps into the spotlight with a solo performance that is both exploratory and rooted in groove. Blending acoustic drums with electronics, loops and percussion, Skinner’s solo work reflects his wide-ranging influences—from Afrobeat and free jazz to avant-garde experimentation. His approach is kinetic yet introspective, a conversation between pulse and abstraction.
