A double headline show featuring Waaju, and a special guest in the form of a Moroccan 'Gnawa' master musician who is visiting and touring the UK for the first time ever!

Led by drummer and percussionist Ben Brown, Waaju’s unique and divergent sound connects the dots between West African and Latin music with a playful and deft musicality that embraces Moroccan Gnawa to Caribbean carnival music mixed with different layers of London’s own musical culture. Waaju's members also perform with the likes of: Nubiyan Twist, Alfa Mist, Ashley Henry, Jordan Rakai & China Moses to name but a few... We've been loving their tracks and trying to bring them to Bristol since their self-titled debut album came out in 2018.

Joining Waaju for this run of shows, is a very special musician indeed! Trance, ritual, mysticism, psychedelia, magic... however one chooses to describe the way that North-African 'Gnawa' music affects people, there can be no denying the fascination for it which reaches right across the world.

Morrocan gimbri-player and singer Majid Bekkas is one of Moroccan music's most dazzling figures, and also probably the musician who has made this music interact most with other genres. Majid Bekkas started his musical career in 1972 playing banjo in Moroccan “Jil” groups rather like Nass El Ghiwane. He has released 11 albums since 2002, 'African Gnaoua Blues', 'Mogador' & ' Makenba' are rich in atmosphere and mood, the mysticism and romance of North African music.

His abilities as a Oud and Lute player are also widely respected, and he is a talented singer! We are over the moon to be able to welcome Majid to the Strange Brew stage in what will be a very rare opportunity to see a Moroccan musician of his calibre on a UK stage.

This gig is a must for any of you who have been to see Electric Jalaba play in Bristol! Expect Worm Soundsystem DJs joining the dots before and after the live music.
