A
gig
held at The Bristol Fringe
on Tuesday 1st March. The event starts at 19:30.
We are so excited for this upcoming Fringe In The Round in a couple of weeks! We have some of the leading voices of contemporary improvised music in the UK coming to play and we are in for a real treat.
Very gifted and individual tenor saxophonist Josh Ison will play the 2nd set with the renowned UK-based improviser, drummer Mark Sanders. This will be some breath taking improvised music with a melodic, human and inviting sensibility also.
First we will hear from the wonderful pairing of improvised flautist Tina Hitchens and highly versatile Bristol- based drummer Dan Johnson in a magical duo which is a highly evolved aesthetic that will work so well in the Fringe.
It's a real privilege to have these guys coming across so we hope that people can make it out to support. Here is some more about the projects:
Josh Ison/ Mark Sanders:
Josh Ison has played with many of the worlds most outstanding improvising musicians including Paul Dunmall, John Edwards,Neil Metcalfe and Tony Marsh. He recorded his debut trio album "Perceive React" in New York with jazz bass legend Henry Grimes and Gerald Cleaver on drums.
"A tenor saxophone with the timbre of rough-cut wood"
"As a debut, Ison has made a big splash. He more than rose to the occasion, as well as providing sensitive support for Grimes and Cleaver. Marvelous all the way around."
Budd Kopman. All About Jazz
Mark Sanders has played with many renowned musicians including Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Derek Bailey, Henry Grimes, Roswell Rudd, Peter Brotzmann, Barry Guy, Otomo Yoshihide, Jah Wobble, Sidsel Endresen , Charles Gayle, Peter Evans and William Parker.
"….the other special ingredient is the ubiquitous, diverse and constantly creative drummer Mark Sanders, who always outdoes himself, whether playing with restraint or erupting like a dynamo."

Tina Hitchens says about their duo:
Dan is a musician and facilitator specialising in percussion, improvisation, listening, and creativity. As well as being a member of EP/64 and DJxKWF, Dan actively performs solo under his own name.
Tina is an improviser, composer and sound artist who plays with a number of groups - including Viridian, Harpoon, and Halftone - and does solo work. She’s interested in free improvisation, in the edges of sounds, and in how we experience ourselves with others through music.
Dan & Tina started playing as a percussion and flute duo during the first UK lockdown in 2020, when they began exploring the acoustic possibilities of outside spaces across the empty city of Bristol. Their performances are improvised responses to each other and the environment around them.
Doors 19.30, music from 20.00.
Tickets: £12 adv/ £15 on the door.
