Fabio Ferri + Longshadows

Bristol guitarist and composer Fabio Ferri brings his trio, combining jazz, electronic influences and classical elements through deep grooves, strong melodies and intricate rhythms. A multi-instrumentalist with a background in both mathematics and music, Fabio has developed a distinctive approach to composition and improvisation, drawing on a wide range of musical worlds without settling comfortably into any one of them. He has been described as “Bristol’s answer to Frank Zappa”, while his music has been played on BBC Radio 3’s Round Midnight, where Soweto Kinch described how one track “expands, contracts”. His live performances combine tightly composed material with the freedom and energy of musicians responding to one another in the moment.

Longshadows bring together Neil Smith, Paul Bradley and Kevin Byrne, three highly experienced Bristol musicians with a remarkable range of musical histories between them. Neil Smith has played with This Is The Kit, The Brackish, Slate Trio and Sliders; Paul Bradley with Three Cane Whale, Organelles, Athea, Me and Carmina; and Kevin Byrne with Calima, Robado and Midnight Brothers. Their three very different guitars — steel-string, electric and nylon-string — move between jazz, rock, classical, folk, African music and flamenco, with compositions and improvisations in which the sounds blend, swirl, separate and reform.

Four guitarists, two distinct ensembles, and a night built around melody, rhythm, texture and improvisation.
