A Sunday afternoon QWAK Club special for Bristol New Music at The Cube.

Raphael Rogiński
Raphael Rogiński is a Polish guitarist, composer and performer, improviser, cultural animator and researcher of musical folklore. Trained in jazz and classical music, he expanded his education to include musicology and ethnomusicology, his interests ranging widely, as heard on innumerable group and ensemble projects. Notable solo releases include 2015’s ‘Raphael Roginski plays John Coltrane and Langston Hughes African mystic music’, or last year’s ‘Talán’, of which Pitchfork writes “there is a numinous power in his instrumental songs—enchanted, uncanny, swarming with ghosts.”

Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh
An Irish viola player living in Glasgow who explores the tonal possibilities of gut strings and wood in both amplified and acoustic contexts. Her amalgamations of influences from improvised, traditional and early music styles can be heard on her awesome solo recordings ‘Oreing' (Fort Evil Fruit 2017), ‘The Rounds' (KRUT 2021) and most recently ‘Live At Sonic Acts’ (Scatter Archive 2023). Artists Nic Oireachtaigh has previously collaborated with include Natalia Beyliss, Pat Thomas, Rhodri Davies, Jon Collin - all of whom have already appeared at QWAK club, so we are delighted to finally be hosting her at the Cube.

Genghis Cohn
Following a series of more collaged, abstract releases, London-based Genghis Cohn aka Gil Shani quietly released a truly special LP called ‘Iron Day’ towards the end of last year - a collection of twelve magnificently crafted, timeless and direct songs which move from heartfelt serenades to devilish summonings about devotional bone temples. The record has already become all-time QWAK club favourite. A deceivingly talented finger-picking guitarist with a rich, enigmatic baritone, expect high rewards on becoming familiar with the curious and intricate music of Genghis Cohn.
