GreenbankJAZZ welcomes a star of the Bristol and UK jazz scene to the stage this Sunday
“If there were a prize for forming bands with instantly distinctive sounds, Bristol-based saxophonist Jake McMurchie would surely carry it off. As a key driving force behind the award-winning quartet Get The Blessing, McMurchie has moved from bass-groove to Michelson Morley’s live-wire industrial loopy without dropping a beat.” LondonJazzNews
“...the inventive McMurchie, his sensual tone falling somewhere between early Sonny Rollins and Plas Johnson, was a revelation. Where has he been?”
London Evening Standard
“... A very, very good tenor saxophonist – very original, very passionate ... a sexy sound.”
Jazz Line-up Radio 3
Born in London, raised in Bristol, Cambridge educated,
Jake McMurchie has been an influential member of the thriving South West jazz scene for two decades.
His distinctive sound, imagination and melodic invention have made him a key member of many of the most innovative and exciting bands to emerge from the south west, notably Get The Blessing, Michelson Morley, What Four, Ultrasound, Jade, Sefrial, to name just a few.
When not touring with GTB, Jake is a key figure in the South West's vibrant jazz scene playing with rising stars Nick Malcolm, Greg Cordez, Sophie Stockham, and is a founder member of the Bristol Composers Collective. He has played or recorded with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Portishead, Massive Attack, Super Furry Animals, Jim Moray, Stephanie Mackay, Thought Forms, Marc Gauvin (France), Katkross (France), and with the great Portuguese singer Fernando Tordo at the National Theatre in Lisbon.
He joins The Alex Veitch Trio. Alex moved to Bristol from London around a year ago; he studied at the Guildhall School and has since secured residencies at Ronnie Scott’s and played at other venues including The Vortex, Cafe Oto, and Pizza Express Soho. He plays regularly around Bristol at venues including The Canteen, The Gallimaufry, The Fringe and The Leftbank, and welcome his trio here on the first Thursday of each month.
