The Love Coffin
Born as a skunkworks project deep within the Copenhagen’s underground scene in 2013, The Love Coffin lurked in the shadows until their 2015 debut ep ‘Veranda’ – a study in the darker aspects of human existence set to intoxicating rock music. After another two years of rehearsing and playing critically lauded concerts, the acclaimed follow-up ‘Buffalo Thunder’, released in the autumn of 2017, revealed a newfound lushness to The Love Coffin’s otherwise thunderously visceral sound.
Their 2018 debut album ‘Cloudlands’ showcases the Copenhagen five-piece at its finest. The Love Coffin’s songs are about contrasts, be it effortless shifts from finely spun melodic melan- choly to searingly dissonant bursts of noise, pendulous lyrical journeys from ominous, tar-black depths of despair to bright shafts of optimism or the schism between Jonatan K. Magnussen’s wildly intimate, volcanic vocals and the cinematic sonic expanse his bandmates conjure around him.
You can glean their influences – particularly the unforgiving squall of noise from Band of Susans, Gun Club’s sepia-tinted dust and grime, The Triffids’ wide-screen perspective and lush pop hooks buried under a rough-hewn bedrock of ugly guitars, not unlike The Jesus & Mary Chain. This band, though, is mainly a beast of its own making. Beneath the bruises lies both a tender- ness, a raw-hearted honesty and a dizzying talent that goes straight for the jugular. You won’t escape unscathed.
