Tom Calladine / Ruby Scott-Geddes at The Orchard Coffee & Co
See event details

A gig on Sunday 12th March. The event starts at 19:30.

Cuculi Presents a double bill of quiet, beguiling alt-folk from two of our favourite local songwriters: Tom Calladine and Ruby Scott-Geddes. Both fairly recent additions to the Bristol scene, they've quickly established themselves as distinctive musical personalities, each of them highly capable of drawing listeners into their beautifully understated songs of wondering and contemplation. Expect some special guests and collaborations!

We're really pleased to return to The Orchard in St George, and to begin our new monthly residency there; we'll be presenting some new and exciting sounds every second Sunday of the month for a while. The bar will be open, selling a range of cocktails, beer & wine as well as a selection of teas and soft drinks.

We recommend buying a ticket in advance as all our previous shows have sold out. Tickets are £10 (general release), with a low income option (£7) and a community supporter option (£14). Having multiple ticket tiers makes the event accessible to people on different incomes while still making sure the musicians get paid, so please consider which tier is most affordable for you.

TOM CALLADINE

Cornish-born but now based in Bristol, Thomas Calladine is a prolific songwriter, multi-instrumentalist & producer with growing acclaim for a style that deftly balances lofi charm with intricate attention to detail. He released his new solo album Each time you go around the sun on Friday 4 March 2022 via Cuculi Records.

He typically writes using guitar and rhythmic pizzicato cello to support his distinctive falsetto vocals, reminiscent of Robin Pecknold and early Bon Iver. With lyrics that offer a gentle invitation to a dreamy abstraction, the influence of Adrienne Lenker is clear in his ability to say so much with a few simple words and chords. There’s an appearance of refreshing effortlessness throughout his musicianship, which suits his lyrical threads of connection, acceptance and awe of the magnitude of nature. His watchful introversion is a writer’s gift, as he sketches out his experience of the world and the universe beyond it, grounding himself in the addictive detail of multifaceted alt-folk arrangements.

RUBY SCOTT-GEDDES

Ruby Scott-Geddes sings blue-green folk songs accompanied by fingerpicked guitar & banjo, cultivated from trad folk sessions in Edinburgh, and influenced by the likes of Nick Drake, Anna & Elizabeth, Nora Brown, Jackson C Frank and Sibylle Baier. Their lyrical songs speak of time, home, spring, rocks and water, all as a means to explore the mistier elements of human experience and mystic elements of nature. They'll be sharing songs from an upcoming EP, currently in production and due for release sometime in 2023.
