Events on Thursday 29th September
“This selection of rarely screened Iranian documentaries from the 1960s is a window into the brilliant documentary movement that emerged in the country in the late 1950s. A distinctive voice as opposed to the Iranian commercial cinema of its time, the movement was fully established by the mid-1960s as the greatest cinematographic offering that Iran had to offer the international film scene. What most of these often commissioned films had in common was the subversion of not only the commissioned subject but also the whole notion of state-sponsored cinema. At least two of the selected films were banned at the time for that bold move.”

“Lee’s first solo project ‘Printing the Space’, marks as a departure from his predominantly screen based work. For the exhibition the artist will invite the audience to provide their labour by producing mono-prints. Their work will then hang inside the exhibition for its duration. The work will be anonymous, but together will create a room inside the Park Street Vestibule. The idea of using an exhibition space and transforming it into a workshop, was inspired by skills and methods learnt on East Bristol Contemporary’s Day School programme. A self funded alternative arts course that includes a studio as well as monthly workshops with invited guest artists and creative practitioners.”

“The focus of the evening will be on the role of socially engaged artworks and projects. We will ask: what is the afterlife of such projects? How do you meaningfully
document socially engaged projects? How do you recreate the 'feel' of a moment in time to share with audiences who weren't there? And how can returns, re-enactments, repetitions and retellings help understand the experience of socially engaged artworks for participants, artists, and audiences?”

“The night will take place on the anniversary of the Munich agreement, agreed to by the old colonial powers (Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy) ceding what they euphemistically coined the "Sudeten German territory" of Czechoslovakia to Germany so as to appease Hitler and avoid war in late 1938. Months later, in March 1939 Hitler reneged on his promise and used his newly acquired mountainous and strategy land to invade and conquer Czechoslovakia.”
