Information:

This event is part of Good Grief Bristol, A Festival of Love and Loss. 11-17 May 2020 (https://goodgriefbristol.com/).
This session covers two topics.

1) Grief in Pop Culture: Public Grieving and Celebrity Deaths, with Dr Ruth Penfould-Mounce
In the first, Grief in Popular Culture: Public grieving and celebrity deaths, Dr Ruth Penfould-Mounce will discuss how the public reacts to celebrities’ deaths. Feeling intense emotions when celebrities die is a noted phenomenon resulting in public displays of grief and memorialization, yet how possible is it to grieve for a person who is well known but not known on a personal level? This workshop will draw on a variety of cases of public grieving for celebrities who have died and will examine how the celebrity dead live on through posthumous careers.

2) Grief in Film, with Dr Jimmy Hay
In the second talk, Dr Jimmy Hay will explore representations of the lived experience of grief in contemporary cinema. He’ll consider the extent to which they are successful in offering more nuanced and empathetic portrayals of an experience that is, all too often, used more as a plot device when addressed in film. Jimmy will discuss an ongoing project he is engaged in which, through utilising the formal elements of film language in two creative filmmaking projects, seeks to explore whether it is possible to create genuine empathy and capture the lived experience of grief and the mourning process.
