Mapping Perception at Watershed
£11.50 full / £9.00 concessions.

A event held at Watershed on Thursday 12th March. The event starts at 18:00.

Developed with Andrew Kötting, this programme of shorts celebrates the collaborations and inspirations between the award-winning filmmaker/artist and his neurodivergent daughter Eden, who together create multimedia artworks exploring themes of disability, imagination and family.

Mapping Perception (2002) (37 mins) dir. Andrew Kötting

At the heart of the film and project is Eden, Andrew’s daughter, born with Joubert Syndrome – a rare genetic disorder, causing cerebellar vermis hypoplasia and several other neurological complications. Eden participates in the film and project as both catalyst and cypher for a more general investigation into how we see the world and perceive difference.

Diseased and Disorderly (2021) (14 mins) dir. Andrew Kötting

A film that uses the paintings, drawings and collages of the neurodiverse artist Eden Kötting to make imagistic gold. Assisted by her father Andrew Kötting, the 2D animator Glenn Whiting and the 3D animator Isabel Skinner the collaboration takes us on a phantasmagorical journey into a world of Eden’s making and then beyond.

The Buzz of the Past (2022) (8 mins) dir. Andrew Kötting

Commissioned by HOME in Manchester for their Derek Jarman season where it played before The Garden (1990), this short film from Andrew and Eden Kötting pays tribute to Jarman and his ongoing inspiration.

Vertical Shapes in a Horizontal Landscape (2018) (5 mins) dir. Mark Jenkin

A pilgrimage undertaken by Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin as he road trips along the south coast of England, from the home of Andrew Kötting to the Dungeness cottage of Derek Jarman, through a haze of post-election hope and despair.

Followed by a Q&A with artist and filmmaker Andrew Kötting.
