A
gig
held at The Cloak and Dagger
on Thursday 22nd December. The event starts at 19:30.
New date: was postponed from 6th November
J.A.M. is a contemporary jazz string trio, featuring Annalise Lam (violin), Julia Dos Reis (viola), and Miranda Lewis-Brown (cello). The trio plays their own re-imaginings of works by jazz heavy weights, such as Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, and Kenny Wheeler, as well as their own compositions. The arrangements leave lots of space for moments of freeness, with a heavy focus on interaction and improvisation - ‘J.A.M.’.
Julia and Miranda have been playing together since 2015 through Gary Crosby’s (OBE) Tomorrow’s Warriors Jazz String project, StringTing, with whom they have gigged extensively across the UK and Europe. They have toured with larger Warrior ensembles such as Peter Edward’s NuCivilisation Orchestra, and Jazz Jamaica, as well as played their own gigs - as a trio and quartet - in venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Club Soho, The Purcell Room SBC. In 2019 they supported legendary saxophonist, Steve Williamson, in a UK tour (Financial Times 4*). Annalise later joined the larger collective of StringTing, first meeting Julia at a Warrior’s workshop led by jazz violinist extraordinaire, Benet McClean. Julia and Annalise struck up a relationship which continued through their Masters studies at Guildhall.
J.A.M. brings the trio together in a new project, based in London and Bristol. In summer 2022 they will be releasing a live performance of Kenny Wheeler’s classic ‘Kind Folk’.
