"Rachel Musson, one of the most quietly brilliant tenor improv innovators on the scene, returns with a brand new quartet. We’ve been floored by her stunning avant-sax soundscapes, toying with bird song, piccolo and church bells, so colour us curious about this fresh setup, exploring group interplay between cello, bass clarinet and violin."

A gig held at The Bristol Fringe on Tuesday 2nd June. The event starts at 20:00.
Saxophonist, improviser, and composer Rachel Musson already has an international reputation as a unique and brilliant improviser and innovator. She's spent over a decade immersed in improvised music, playing with many of the greatest names in the genre but always with her own distinctive voice. She is now gradually introducing composed elements into her work, drawing on text, field recordings and processing sounds.
This brand-new quartet features the brilliant Theo May (violin), Sarah Moody (cello), and Chris Cundy (bass clarinet).
Rachel is also involved with a variety of improvisation projects, featuring on several releases (577 Records, Babel Label, Two Rivers Records), performing with musicians such as Pat Thomas and Mark Sanders, and a recent improvised collaboration with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Her recent album, Ashes and Dust Earth and Sky, blends compositions, improvisations and field recordings, and her solo performances have evolved to incorporate these sounds in a live setting.
Rachel is a current (2024-2027) recipient of the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Composer award.
"Musson tells stories with a cohesive precision while shifting back and forth between folk-melody, contemplative sax and raw, overblown sonic textures using a varied range of extended technique."
