Fringe In The Round - Orfic + Malcolm/Nash at The Bristol Fringe
See event details

A gig held at The Bristol Fringe on Tuesday 5th April. The event starts at 19:30.

Fringe In The Round are delighted to bring you the second of our double bills gigs of 2022, one that yet again celebrates the incredible musical creativity that Bristol is blessed with at the moment.

Sophie Stockham is one of the most original saxophonists to come out of the city in recent years. Eschewing many of the traditional pyrotechnics associated with the instrument, she crafts beautifully melodic, considered improvisations based on depth of sound, variety of colour and a completely engaging sense of musical narrative. She brings her quartet Orphic featuring Get The Blessing trumpet master Pete Judge and first call rhythm section of Matt Brown and Chris Jones on drums and bass.

Bristol native Rebecca Nash is one of the UK's leading pianists and composers. Currently in the middle of a UK tour and album release of sextet music originally commissioned by the Bristol Jazz Festival in 2019, she will be playing tonight in an intimate duo setting with close friend and collaborator of nearly 20 years, trumpeter Nick Malcolm. The suite of music explores the chemical element Platinum and its related metals; if you're wondering how that subject can inspire beautiful, moving and challenging music then you'll have your answer after hearing the gig!

Redefining Element 78 presents a compositional voice of increasing clarity and singular warmth. Distilling elements of Rebecca’s previous album Peaceful King, together with her classical roots ranging from Debussy, Tavener, and Tippett, Defining Element 78 is an album of luscious, dense harmonies and wide atmospheric soundscapes.

Commissioned by Bristol Jazz Festival in 2019, the collection of six pieces are further inspired by two intriguing extra musical influences: the chemical elements contained within the Platinum metal family and Rebecca’s work with legendary New York alto saxophonist, John O’Gallagher, who features on the album and a handful of the tour dates.

The music’s excitement comes from a creative tension between detailed through-composed sections and large swathes of free improvisation. The deep sense of trust and connection between the musicians, set against the ethereal other-worldly compositional textures leads to spontaneous, daring, and unpredictable music making.

Redefining Element 78, the follow up release to Rebecca’s genre-defying Peaceful King, will be released on Whirlwind Recordings in 2022.
